My Story: Rising Above the Struggle

At 33 years old, my life changed in an instant. One moment, I was living my life as a wife, mother, and teacher; the next, I was in a hospital bed, unable to speak, move, or care for myself. The stroke had taken so much from me—my words, my mobility, my independence—but it couldn't take my determination.

I remember sitting in that hospital, unable to verbalize a single word. My body wouldn’t cooperate; even the simplest things—showering, brushing my hair, picking out my outfit, tying my shoes—felt impossible. I had to relearn everything from scratch: how to stand, how to walk, how to talk.

It would have been easy to give up. Many people in my situation would turn to despair, and I won’t lie—it was hard. But I had a reason to keep going. I had my daughter, who was just five years old at the time. She needed her mom. I had my husband, who stood by me through it all. I had my son Dylan, who gave me so much strength. They were my anchor, my motivation, and my constant reminder that I couldn’t give up.

Relearning life after my stroke was one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced. There were moments of frustration, moments of doubt, and moments where I felt like the odds were stacked against me. But through it all, I found strength I didn’t know I had. Every step forward, no matter how small, was a victory.

Today, I’m proud to say that I’ve come so far. My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s made me who I am. I’ve learned to walk, talk, and even drive again. I’ve learned that life doesn’t end with a stroke—it’s just a new chapter, one where resilience, love, and determination take center stage.

This is why I created One-Handed Hustle. To share my journey, to inspire others who might be facing their own struggles, and to remind everyone that even when life knocks you down, you can rise against.
